The reason for the decrease in viscosity of the anionic polyacrylamide solution

Polyacrylamide (PAM) needs to be dissolved into a liquid for use. During its application, PAM solutions often experience a decrease in viscosity and a reduction in the flocculant effect, which affects the usage effect. The Saiseco Environmental Protection Technology Chemical Factory, based on years of experience, has summarized the following reasons.

1. Storage time:

As the storage time of PAM solution increases, more and more of it degrades, resulting in lower viscosity and poorer flocculant effect. Generally, an anionic PAM solution can be stored for seven days, and an anionic PAM solution can be stored for 24 hours. This is due to the hydrolysis of the amide group and the increase in hydroxyl content. Especially the influence of the presence of anionic groups is more obvious. The removal of NH3 from the amide group to form an imide group is what causes the increase in molecular chain rigidity.

2. Temperature influence:

For a 0.1% PAM solution, when the temperature reaches 80-90℃, the 1800 million molecular weight will degrade to around 500 million within 2-4 hours. As the temperature increases, the degradation becomes faster. The performance is stable at room temperature of 25℃.

3. Mechanical effect influence:

Stirring can increase the dissolution speed of PAM dry powder. High-intensity stirring speed will cut the molecular chains of polyacrylamide. It is recommended to control the stirring speed at 60 revolutions per minute. Do not use high-intensity stirring equipment and high-speed conveying equipment.

4. Light influence:

Lighting will cause the temperature to rise, leading to the dissolution and degradation of polyacrylamide. Direct exposure to ultraviolet light will cause rapid dissolution degradation. Under strong light exposure for 3-5 hours, the molecular weight of PAM will decrease by 30-50%.
